Bike Tour. Day 1.

June 13, 2008

Obviously, my bike trip didn’t last for one day. I made it all the way to Stockholm. Click below to read about the first leg of the trip, from Lund to Loshult.

I left Lund at around 10AM, with plans to eat lunch in Höör. Here’s my loaded bike outside my front door.

Rapeseed fields between Flyinge and Kungshult.

This looks like an abandoned… building… outside of Stehag. Also pictured is the first of many brooks I’ll be crossing.

Västra Ringsjön! The two lakes that make up the Ringsjön are the biggest in Skåne.

Here’s some spooky woods outside of Höör. The terrain began to get hilly around here - I’d never really biked anywhere in Sweden before with honest hills. They would become a recurring theme on the journey.

Here’s a sweet wall mural in Höör, where I stopped for pizza. The guy I ordered from said he was from Bosnia and had moved to Sweden 2 years ago. Immigrants are great to practice Swedish with because they aren’t all fluent in English.

The Skåne Djurpark! I’ve been here before - it’s a zoo with Scandinavian animals as the focus. There’s foxes and wolves and moose and things of that nature.

In Swedish/Danish, “fart” meens “speed” or “traffic”. This will be the first in a series of 3 pictures exploiting this.

I had hoped to get as far as Hassleholm and set up camp for the day. As it turns out, I was on pace to hit Hassleholm at 3PM, meaning I had 6 more hours worth to bike and screw around. The way from Hassleholm was very foresty (I missed a couple photo-ops for Moose Warning traffic signs) and same-y, although one small girl tried to chase me down the road and yelled “WHAT’S YOUR NAME!” at one point. Hassleholm wasn’t that cool, so I just stopped to eat a snack and kept moving. Here’s an ominous church just north of Hassleholm!

I was excited to get to Broby, because it has a funny name. Turns out it’s a pretty nice little town! Here’s the town center and the stupid church.

Östanå is a pretty nice little town, considering it’s not too close to anything and the main road is dirt. There’s a restored mill and a sweet bridge, and some pretty girls I saw.

Here’s the final two unfortunate signs for this blog post.

Osby is a totally sweet town. I stopped in for dinner to eat the best kebab I’ve had in Sweden so far, and walked around. Their claim to fame seems to be the BRIO line of toys that nobody I knew ever had as a kid. They’re from here, and the whole town is proud of it. That ugly clown? I’ve actually taken its picture before, a couple years ago, as it’s a gas station landmark on the main drag connecting Skåne to anywhere else you might want to go in east/central Sweden.

Here’s a field!

I biked on and on and finally, it was getting dark, so I pulled off a little south of Älmhult and hiked my impossibly heavy bike into a forest. I had biked clear across Skåne and was practically in Småland! I know 91 miles isn’t amazing or anything, but it’s pretty good for me, so SHUT UP.

Getting to sleep was quick and painless. I ate some snacks, and then fell the hell asleep. Party!
