Back to Dalby. Then into Malmö!

May 19, 2008

On the 14th, I decided to not give up and actually find the damned rock quarry in Dalby. It turns out that the previous day, I turned around maybe a hundred meters too soon. So I found the quarry, and as an added bonus, there was a sweet forest right there too. BUT DON’T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT.

It turned out a little more like a park than I thought it would be.

Then all these high school kids came by on a field trip and so I retreated to the forest.

I biked back to Lund and then decided to check out a thrift store in Arlöv. It was closed, so here’s the next best thing. A Swedish traffic jam!

I decided to continue into Malmö, as it was such a nice day out. It’s Sweden’s third biggest city! But first - I was super hungry, so I stopped in for a stor doner kebab in the immigrant-ish outskirts pictured here.

Here’s a square that I can’t remember the name of. I think it’s one of the bigger ones in town.

Here’s an archway.

But here! The tallest building in Scandinavia and a huge food store to boot. That’s pictureworthy.

I mean, look at the size of this grocery store. Why would you shop anywhere else? Because you’re stupid!

They were just starting to build this guy, the Turning Torso, the last time I was here. You’d think it’s an office building or center of commerce or something to that effect, but no - it’s just a bunch of rich-people apartments stacked on top of one another to make it the tallest damn building in all of Scandinavia. And it’s surrounded by other rich-people designy-architecture buildings on all sides.

Here’s some random pictures of Västra Hämnet (the west harbor). I get the feeling, because it didn’t really exist 3.5 years ago, that developers gave a name to an area that used to only be docks and decaying shipyards. At least they aren’t totally rediculous about it, like the San Diego developers pretending that anybody but homeless people, let alone artists ever lived in their dumb “West Village”. And I hear that Idaho’s capital has a “up and coming” BoDo (Boise Downtown). That kinda makes me sick.

I an just imagine the rich people hanging out in their temperature and humidity controlled greenhouse, in the middle of a snowstorm in February, waving at all the poor people outside who aren’t wearing bermuda shorts.

The Öresundsbron (Bridge over Öre’s Sound) to Copenhagen.

A big park, and boats, and… gasp - fixed gear dorks have invaded even the furthest stretches of the globe. Not really though.

I decided to head back… not before checking out the super grocery store for candy. It actually turned out to be similar to, but smaller on the inside than your average Walmart.

The “American Food” section. Looks about right.

Red bikes!
